Google added Gemini to the Windows system tray this week as a free app, meaning less browser-tab juggling for anyone who uses Gemini throughout the workday. This is a smart move by Google, and Microsoft should be a bit worried. Moving from a browser tab to a dedicated app is always the better option.
On my Mac, I run ChatGPT/Codex, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and others as dedicated desktop apps, and I don’t think I could work without having them app-based rather than browser-based. The hardest jump is integrating browsing capabilities directly into the work you are doing in those AI apps, but this functionality is getting better, easier, and more reliable.
And, of course, the easier it is to access from your computer (not your browser), the more you will use it, which is why pricing tiers have been announced.
