Apple apparently baked the ability to swap Siri out for ChatGPT or Claude directly into iOS 27’s architecture, and if that ever becomes a real user-facing option, it completely changes what it means to “use Siri.” We already saw this with the first release of Apple Intelligence, where if Siri couldn’t complete a complex request, it could optionally pop out to ChatGPT if the end user had connected and enabled their personal ChatGPT account.
It sounds similar but goes deeper and offers more options. Siri becomes more like a conductor or traffic cop, routing AI-related requests appropriately if the user permits it. Being able to choose the AI model you want is important, as they do differ in the types and quality of responses they provide.
But it is too soon to know what this “feature” will actually include and do. Seeing some line in the iOS 27 code is one thing. It offers a glimpse. I expect it will be several months before we actually see some tangible functionality.
