Reddit Is Ending RSS Feeds on November 13 and Closing Its Public API to Fight AI Bots

Summary

Reddit will shut off RSS feeds on November 13, 2026, and close its public API in March 2027, saying AI scrapers and automated bots are the reason. Third-party app developers must register by January 12, 2027, to keep access, and AI companies will need commercial licensing deals. Reddit’s non-ad revenue, mostly AI licensing, grew 24% year over year last quarter.

Why it matters

If you follow subreddits in a news reader, those feeds go dark in six weeks. It is also another sign that open web data is being locked behind licensing deals.

HTD Says

If your RSS reader pulls in Reddit, you have until November 13 to find another way, and this is one more case of AI scraping ruining the open web for everyone else. I know of third-party apps that were shut down last year because of their access to Reddit (anyone remember Apollo?).

Interestingly, several months ago, I developed a simple in-browser way to extract and filter Reddit threads. It was just a local webpage. But then Reddit made some changes, and I had to rework the HTML app. I got a new version running but haven’t touched it in a while. It may be time to revisit it, especially when changes happen.

My mini-HTML app was not a replacement for using Reddit. It was, however, a way to filter and extract a long Reddit thread and save the output for AI analysis. Yeah, I will definitely revisit it.
