iOS 27 CarPlay Adds Parked Video and Siri AI, but Only Newer iPhones Get the Full Set

Summary

iOS 27 brings video apps to CarPlay screens that only play when the car is parked, plus a Now Playing mini-player with a scrub bar and route sharing for navigation apps. Siri AI in CarPlay can answer general questions and pull from your email, messages, and calendar, but it needs an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, or newer. The update runs on iPhone 11 and later, and Siri AI isn’t available in the EU.

Why it matters

Many families run older iPhones, and the best CarPlay features won’t work on them. Check your phone before you promise anyone a smarter dashboard.

HTD Says

CarPlay finally gets the features people have wanted for years, but Apple tied the best one to newer iPhones, so check which phone is in your cup holder before you get excited. First, I cannot believe that it took this long to be able to scrub through a song. That alone is worth the upgrade.

As for playing video while parked, that is a great win for parents or people waiting on others. You could get DVD head units that also had DVD playback disabled when driving; however, there were screen codes and even hardware switches that could be put in by installers that would emulate a parking brake (shhhh, I had one of those). But video apps that work in CarPlay can detect if you are moving, so I don’t think there is any way to add a hardware switch to your iPhone.

Still, to take advantage of these features, you need the latest and greatest iPhone and iOS 27. I haven’t tested this out yet but will be doing so soon.
