Bluetooth Is Getting Nearly Four Times Faster in 2027, Starting With Better Wireless Audio

Summary

The Bluetooth SIG formally adopted High Data Throughput, an optional feature of Bluetooth Core 7.0 that lifts Bluetooth LE speeds from 2Mbps to up to 7.5Mbps. The first devices are expected in early 2027. Faster links should mean better wireless audio, spatial and multi-channel sound, and quicker syncing for smartwatches and fitness gear.

Why it matters

Most people buy earbuds, headphones, and wearables, and they’ll benefit first. Expect the first compatible gear to show up around CES in January.

HTD Says

Bluetooth audio has always been the weak link, and this upgrade is the first one in a while that could change how your earbuds sound. I do love it when new standards are announced, ratified, and adopted. And when manufacturers start implementing them, consumers benefit.

The ability to transmit more data more quickly can bring many more solutions. For example, it will improve audio quality for wireless devices. In my living room, I had to hide satellite speaker wire throughout. Now I think surround sound systems may benefit dramatically from this new Bluetooth standard.

Higher-quality audio is one thing; faster Bluetooth data transmission is another. Instead of spending minutes updating your wireless devices via Bluetooth LE, you could potentially do it in seconds.
