DoorDash Launches an AI Agent You Can Text to Order Dinner in Apple Messages

Summary

DoorDash is testing an AI agent inside Apple Messages. You text something like “order my usual,” and it searches local restaurants, suggests dishes based on your habits, sends food photos, and handles group orders with mixed dietary needs. It is on a waitlist for U.S. users, and DoorDash also said it is testing delivery drones with select Northern California restaurants.

Why it matters

It is a clear example of AI agents pulling everyday tasks out of standalone apps and into the apps people already live in. It also puts DoorDash ahead of Uber Eats and Grubhub on the agent front.

HTD Says

Ordering dinner by texting “the usual” sounds great until you remember someone has to decide how much a bot gets to know about your family’s food habits, and that is the conversation worth having. This is yet another example of these consumer-focused AI agents. We had the launch of OpenAI’s Dots and Meta’s Muse. Spending money using agentic workflows is getting easier and easier.

My other question is: who gets the tip? Does AI get its own tip? If the AI Agent is used, does it get a portion of the sale?

Expect more agentic AI integrations and services like these soon. I think it may get a bit messy until people establish standards and protocols that work across different 3rd parties. Will these be MCP integrations? How can small businesses work with this… hmmm, product idea there.
