Google’s Universal Cart Brings AI-Assisted Shopping to Search and Gemini in the US

Summary

Google’s Universal Cart, first previewed at I/O in May, is now live for US users in Search and the Gemini app. You can save products from different retailers in one cart; it sends alerts for price drops and restocks, surfaces promo codes, and suggests which card to use. Checkout runs through Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol.

Why it matters

The holiday shopping season is close, and this free tool does the price tracking most people do with browser tabs and spreadsheets. It also means Google is now handling more of the buying step.

HTD Says

The holiday shopping tab pileup might finally have a fix, though handing Google the checkout is a trade I would want my readers to make with their eyes open. Sure, other companies are doing similar things like OpenAI and Amazon, but now there is another player in the mix, one that has deep “insights” into web and shopping data, namely Google.

I always circle back to the user experience. How will Google do this with the least friction? Will they be a “broker” of sorts, the one we transact with directly? Or is this more of an agentic play where Gemini cleanly compiles information and notifies you of results or changes?

I expect more features and services like this to be popping up in the coming weeks (if they want to hit Black Friday). I’m not sure I am ready to unleash my family on this, but if it saves a few dollars here and there, it might be worth it.
