Windows 11’s October Update Fixes PDF Previews, Remaps the Copilot Key, and Backs Up Phone Photos

Summary

Microsoft’s October Windows 11 update (KB5127648) restores PDF previews in File Explorer and lets you remap the Copilot key to open Search, an app, or the context menu. It also adds Bluetooth audio fixes, new touchpad scrolling gestures, and phone camera roll backup to OneDrive. PC-to-PC Migration is gone, and Microsoft points people to Windows Backup instead.

Why it matters

The Copilot key remap is the one many people have wanted since new laptops started shipping with it. The Bluetooth fixes should help anyone with wireless earbuds on a Windows PC.

HTD Says

Microsoft finally lets you decide what that Copilot key does, and the PDF preview fix is definitely one that people will notice. I never really understood why companies dedicate or “hard-code” a specific key to do only one task. If you use a 3rd-party keyboard, that key (and its linked functionality) simply disappears. But on a PC, you can map the key to other functions. Apple did the same with the Action button on newer iPhones, making your device much more customizable to your preferences. I’m glad that Microsoft finally saw the light.

The other fixes are good, too. Everyone uses PDFs, and being able to preview them without opening them is super helpful (think pressing the space bar on a Mac).

If companies can add new functionality, features, and fixes to existing hardware, it makes consumers who bought those devices a bit “stickier.” I just wrote about doing this with older Google Home and Nest devices.
