Meta’s answer to the smart glasses privacy debate is to leave out a camera, and for many people who want wearable AI assistance without the awkwardness of recording, that probably makes more sense than any software fix. While OpenAI seems to be leaning into vision AI more through a recent acquisition, Meta seems to be taking a step back.
The privacy thing is real. While I know I could personally benefit from some extra “recognition” of people (I’m horrible with names), scanning someone’s face to give me information on a heads-up display based on that scan (without the person’s consent) is a bit much.
So Meta drops the camera and then seems to over-rotate by adding six microphones. So will they do the same type of recognition, but with voice? Will everything be recorded and parsed by AI? I still have some privacy concerns, even with the camera being dropped.
