Amazon’s New Fire TV Stick 4K Gets Wi-Fi 6, a Faster Chip, and a Remote You Can Find by Feel

Summary

Amazon unveiled a thinner Fire TV Stick 4K with a quad-core 1.7GHz chip, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and 8GB of storage. It runs Amazon’s Vega operating system and can draw power from the TV’s USB port or a wall outlet. The redesigned remote has a metal home button, differently shaped keys, and a customizable star button; a $15 standalone remote is also part of the lineup.

Why it matters

This is the living-room gadget most families actually use, and it pushes Alexa+ further into home entertainment. It costs $59.99, and Prime Big Deal Days next week should bring it to about $30.

HTD Says

Amazon finally fixed the thing everyone fumbles in the dark: the remote, and if the Big Deal Days price holds at $30, this is an easy stocking-stuffer recommendation for readers still on a five-year-old stick. I have a bunch of old Amazon Fire TV Sticks in drawers and boxes all around my house. I use them periodically to stream shows in my backyard or when traveling.

This Fire TV update is interesting, especially with Prime Day coming. And the extra remote (at an additional cost) is intriguing as well. The Fire TV Stick is portable and small, and great for traveling or for an apartment or a dorm room. And the price is also compelling.

I just want to see what the new Apple TV will be. It is larger and more expensive. So, you have two different angles to consider if you are thinking about a streaming upgrade.
