Withings Will Charge New Users $100 a Year to Sync Health Data With Apple Health

Summary

Withings now requires a Withings+ subscription ($100 a year) for automatic syncing to Apple Health and other third-party apps. The change applies to accounts created after October 13, and existing users appear unaffected. Manual export of your history remains free.

Why it matters

Anyone shopping for a smart scale, watch, or blood pressure cuff this holiday season should check whether the hardware requires a subscription to work. A device that works with your health apps today can lose that feature behind a paywall.

HTD Says

Paying $100 a year so a scale you already bought can talk to Apple Health is the kind of subscription creep that makes me read the fine print before I buy any gadget now. I get that companies need revenue to support integrations and feature development, but consumers’ wallets are already pinched or shut tight, so this will piss people off.

I’ve had a Withings scale for many years. It currently syncs with Apple Health. If I suddenly have to start paying a fee for something I have been using for years, I will definitely look for alternatives. Or maybe an AI builder will develop a workaround. There is a lot of ingenuity out there.

If existing users are impacted (which it appears they are not… yet), the backlash will be big. I get the desire to make money wherever possible, but there has to be a reasonable limit, or customers will quickly find alternatives.
