Review of the UGREEN Nexode Pro GaN charger series - 65W, 100W, and 160W versions of this versatile, compact, and powerful charger line.

I encounter this issue almost every day. From a request like “Dad, I need a charger” to me heading off to the office and having to get all of my tech into my backpack. I hated having to hunt around for a wall charger for my devices that could handle “everything.” But I now have an easy solution: just grab or give out one of the new UGREEN Nexode Pro chargers. Whether it’s to charge a smartphone, tablet, or even a laptop, one of these Nexode Pro chargers will be up for the job! (*Disclosure below.)

We often find ourselves grappling with an ever-growing collection of devices—laptops, tablets, smartphones, smartwatches, and more. Each device demands its own charger, cable, and power adapter, resulting in a tangled mess of wires and a constant struggle to keep everything powered up, especially when traveling or on the go. I know this a bit too well. There are plenty of solutions out there, but which one do you choose? For many years, I have been relying on and reviewing those from UGREEN.

Real-World Charging Scenarios

Whether you’re a busy professional, a student juggling classes and extracurriculars, or a tech-savvy traveler, the Nexode Pro Charger Series has a charger specific to your needs. In this review, I’m looking at three Nexode Pro chargers: the 65W, 100W, and 160W. Each one is slightly nuanced in the use cases, but they all pretty much accomplish the same goal—providing multi-port charging capabilities in a small form factor.

Imagine you’re a college student attending classes, studying in the library, and collaborating on group projects. With the 65W Nexode Pro Charger, you can effortlessly charge your laptop (like a MacBook Air), tablet, and smartphone simultaneously, ensuring you never run out of battery during those long study sessions.

The 65W version - UGREEN Nexode Pro Charger series - HighTechDad review

Pros:

  • Compact size and lightweight design for easy portability
  • Affordable price point

The UGREEN Nexode Pro 100W Model: Versatility for Power Users

The 100W Nexode Pro Charger allows you to rapidly charge your laptop while also keeping your smartphone and tablet powered up, enabling you to seamlessly transition between work, entertainment, and communication without battery anxiety.

The 100W version - UGREEN Nexode Pro Charger series - HighTechDad review

  • Good balance of power and portability
  • Faster charging capabilities compared to the 65W model

Cons:

  • More expensive than the 65W model
  • May not provide enough wattage for the latest high-end laptops or demanding multi-device setups

The UGREEN Nexode Pro 160W Model: Ultimate Power for High-Demand Setups

Imagine you’re a creative professional with a high-end laptop (like a 16-inch MacBook Pro), an iPad for sketching or note-taking, a smartphone for staying connected, and a smartwatch or wireless headphones. The 160W Nexode Pro Charger can handle all these devices simultaneously, delivering the power needed to keep your entire tech ecosystem running smoothly.

The 160W version - UGREEN Nexode Pro Charger series - HighTechDad review

Pros:

  • Impressive 140W output for rapidly charging high-performance laptops
  • Ability to charge multiple devices concurrently with intelligent power distribution
  • Future-proof and capable of handling even the most demanding charging scenarios

Cons:

  • Larger size and higher price point
  • Overkill for users with modest charging needs or fewer devices

Advanced GaNInfinity Chip Technology

I always love it when companies come up with their own trademarked terms to describe a feature. In the case of these charges, that word is “GaNInfinity.” This chip technology leverages the benefits of Gallium Nitride (GaN) semiconductors and offers several advantages over traditional silicon-based chargers:

  1. Faster and More Efficient Charging – The GaNInfinity chip enables faster charging speeds and higher energy efficiency, translating to quicker charge times for your devices without wasting power.
  2. Improved Thermal Management – GaN semiconductors generate less heat, allowing for better thermal management and heat dissipation. This not only enhances the chargers’ safety but also enables a more compact and lightweight design.
  3. Increased Power Density – The high power density of GaN chips means the Nexode Pro Chargers can pack more power into a smaller footprint, making them incredibly portable and travel-friendly.

Sleek, Portable, and User-Friendly Design

While the Nexode Pro Charger Series excels in performance and functionality, it keeps aesthetics and usability intact. These chargers boast a sleek, minimalist design that not only looks great but also prioritizes convenience and portability.

To be honest, these chargers feel dense, like the circuitry has been compressed and packed into the small form factor. They actually feel a bit heavier than some traditional wall chargers. But when comparing weights, you need to look at a few factors—power output, the number of ports, and the dimensions.

Foldable plug open - UGREEN Nexode Pro Charger series - HighTechDad review

One feature that I love is a “small one.” It is that of the foldable plug design, which allows the chargers to be easily stowed away in bags or pockets when not in use. No more bulky, protruding plugs taking up precious space or risking damage during transit.

Comprehensive Protection and Safety Features

Safety is paramount when it comes to charging valuable devices, and UGREEN has taken measures to ensure the Nexode Pro Charger Series provides a secure and reliable charging experience. These chargers are equipped with intelligent chips that safeguard against potential risks, including:

  • Short Circuit Protection
  • Overvoltage Protection
  • Overtemperature Protection
  • Overcurrent Protection

Lots of buzzwords here. So what does that mean? Essentially, there are multiple temperature, voltage, and electrical protection layers. That means that even during extended charging sessions or when using the chargers’ high-wattage output capabilities, your chargers will remain reliable and operational, and they will cut off if an issue is encountered, thus protecting your devices.

Multiple USB Ports means Intelligent Power Distribution and Versatility

Another important feature of the Nexode Pro Charger Series is its intelligent power distribution system. Translated into layperson’s terms, each charger is designed with multiple USB-C and USB-A ports, allowing you to charge various devices simultaneously.

All three charges with ports - UGREEN Nexode Pro Charger series - HighTechDad review

The 65W model, for instance, offers two USB-C ports and one USB-A port, enabling you to charge a laptop, tablet, and smartphone concurrently. The 100W model follows a similar configuration but with increased wattage output, making it suitable for charging larger laptops alongside other devices.

My favorite is the 160W model, which takes versatility to the next level with three USB-C ports and one USB-A port. Its impressive 140W output on the primary USB-C port means you can rapidly charge even the most power-hungry laptops while the remaining ports handle your other devices, ensuring everything stays juiced up.

Intelligent power distribution algorithms ensure that the available wattage is optimally allocated based on the connected devices’ charging requirements, maximizing efficiency and minimizing wasted energy.

Remember to read either the manual or look at the product websites (65W100W, and 160W) for each charger to understand the power distribution by port based on the number of devices simultaneously plugged in.

Choosing the Right Nexode Pro Charger

So which one is right for you? My short answer is, if you can afford it, go with the 160W version. While it is obviously the most expensive, has a larger size, and weighs more, it also offers the highest wattage output, especially when only using a single USB-C port. But it is also versatile enough to power and charge multiple power-hungry devices simultaneously.

Top of all three chargers - UGREEN Nexode Pro Charger series - HighTechDad review

But if you are still on the fence, here are a few things to consider:

  1. Device Power Requirements – Evaluate the power demands of the devices you typically need to charge, such as laptops, tablets, smartphones, and accessories. Higher-wattage models like the 160W are better suited for power-hungry laptops and multi-device setups, while the 65W or 100W options may suffice for more modest needs and smaller devices.
  2. Number of Devices – Consider how many devices you regularly need to charge simultaneously. The 160W model, with its four ports, is ideal for power users juggling multiple gadgets, while the three-port 65W or 100W chargers may be more suitable for those with fewer devices.
  3. Portability Needs – If you frequently travel or are constantly on the go, prioritize portability and opt for the more compact 65W or 100W models. However, if size and weight are less of a concern, the 160W charger’s additional power and versatility may be worth the trade-off.
  4. Budget Considerations – While the Nexode Pro Charger Series offers excellent value for its capabilities, the higher-wattage models come with a higher price tag. Determine your budget and strike a balance between power, versatility, and cost.

While this series is relatively new, some discounts are already being seen. The 65W version normally retails for $55.99 on the UGREEN site but is currently $47.59 (which is the same price as on Amazon). The 100W is usually $74.99 on UGREEN and is on sale currently for $63.74. It is also $63.74 on Amazon right now. And the 160W charger usually is $119.99 on UGREEN but is too on sale for $101.99. It is also retailing for $101.99 on Amazon.
