Anthropic just made it possible for entire school districts to put Claude in teachers’ hands for free, and the FERPA compliance piece is what separates this from the usual ‘AI for education’ press release. I’m all in favor of educators and instructional institutions getting the tools they need to teach and, hopefully, to help students learn.
But giving someone a tool comes with a lot of responsibility. You don’t hand a saw to someone who has never used one before without teaching them how to be safe and use it effectively and efficiently. Similarly, as an educational institution, you don’t just flip on the AI switch and expect teachers to be successful at all levels.
I hope that teacher training is part of the process. I haven’t dug into this, but it’s an important field for both educators and AI professionals. I expect (and hope) there will be new job types coming from this.
