Walmart Lets AI Shopping Agents Buy for You Through a New Gateway, With Spending Limits You Control

Summary

Walmart announced Agent Gateway, a connection that lets approved AI agents search Walmart and Sam’s Club inventory and place orders for you. Next month, each agent will have its own profile in your account, and you can either approve every purchase or set spending limits. Agents cannot see your payment details, and Walmart’s normal return policy still applies if one buys the wrong thing.

Why it matters

Amazon is blocking AI shopping agents while Walmart invites them, so where you shop may soon decide which assistant can do your errands. Any Walmart account holder can use it, and Walmart+ is not required.

HTD Says

Walmart treating an AI agent like an authorized user on a credit card is a smart way to make this feel safe, and it puts real pressure on Amazon to explain why it keeps the door shut. I think this is a smart move by Walmart, especially as the holiday shopping season is kicking off. If you can give your Walmart AI Shopping Agent a budget and a wish list, and it actually sticks to those guardrails, it could make shopping a bit easier.

My wife loves going out to find deals. I’m a strategic shopper: I know what I want, find it at the lowest price, and then buy it either in person or online. I bet you can guess who in our family will use Walmart’s AI Shopping Agent.

I think the challenge for shoppers this year will be deciding which Shopping Agent to use, based on ease of use or the best deal.
