Google Earth Launched AI Image Generation, Then Pulled It in Under 24 Hours Over Misinformation Concerns
Google added Nano Banana 2 AI image generation to Google Earth’s web app on July 30, letting users pick any location from satellite or 3D view and generate a custom visual scene. The feature was live for less than 24 hours before Google pulled it. Users were creating and sharing convincing fake satellite images of conflict zones, altered landmarks, and fabricated disaster scenes. Google said it saw legitimate professional use cases but could not contain policy violations at scale. The feature is offline while Google works on stronger guardrails before a relaunch.
